If you are done with eating plain old traditional American apple pies and you want something fresh and foreign, you should try our great recipe for German Apple Pie. This is a classic German apple pie recipe that is sure to make you want to jump on the next plane straight to Berlin. It has a great apple and cinnamon taste with loads of cream mixed in with it to add that great German flavor. This is an award winning recipe known from the West Coast to the Castles of Bavaria, and after you taste it you will know why. So if you are looking for a real taste of Germany, but don’t want to head all the way over to Europe and you just want to enjoy a great apple pie, heat up your oven and get baking!
Ingredients:
- one and a half cups of flour
- one half of a teaspoon of salt
- one half a cup of shortening
- one teaspoon of vanilla extract
- three tablespoons of very cold water
- one cup of sugar
- one-quarter cup of flour
- six cups of peeled, sliced and cored apples, (they should be tart apples).
- two teaspoons of cinnamon that is already ground
- one cup of heavy cream for whipping
Directions:
- Mix the flour and salt together in a small bowl.
- Add in pieces of the shortening and mix it until the mixture is a crumbly consistency.
- Add in the vanilla.
- Slowly add the water and use a fork to mix it until it is a ball of dough.
- Roll out the dough into a 9 inch circle.
- Put the circle into a 9 inch pie pan.
- Trim and flute the edges.
To make the filling:
- Preheat your oven to 450 degrees F
- Mix the sugar with the flour and cinnamon, sprinkle in three tablespoons into the crust.
- Put half of the sliced apples on top of the flour and cinnamon mixture in the pie and keep repeating this.
- Pour the cream over the pie filling.
- Bake the pie for 10 minutes, then turn the heat down to 350 degrees F and bake it for about another hour.
